International Sporting Events & Human Rights<\/a>Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sport is a powerful, global driving force and can contribute to the breakthrough of human rights through the establishment of social and international contacts. On the other hand, the darker side of sport also entails the danger of ignoring or even violating human rights. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is a cautionary example of this even before it begins.
This handbook is intended to support Austrian sports federations in organising future sporting events of international calibre in the spirit of human rights. Domestic organisers of sports events, including the federal government, provinces, municipalities, cities and business partners, will find in this publication a guide for the step-by-step planning of their events – from the conception to the final evaluation phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martin Kainz from the fairplay initiative at the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation (VIDC), who is responsible for the development of the handbook, emphasises the pioneering role that Austrian sport is taking as a result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are very few countries worldwide with comparable initiatives. Austrian sport is on a very good path to pioneer and serve as a model for other countries and federations.”<\/p>\nMartin Kainz, fairplay<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Support in the preparation of the handbook came from national and international experts as well as from the federations.and international experts as well as from the associations of the Ministry’s working group on sport and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
